Karst Modeling

karstModeling2.png

Groundwater management in karstic aquifers has several challenges because of the characterization of a mixed flow in porous media and karstic conduits and the high uncertainty in the geometry and flow properties of the conduit network. Numerical modeling is a tool to provide effective answers for the evaluation of flow and quality in a karstic network, the interaction with water bodies and the availability/vulnerability as a water source.

Hatarilabs develops groundwater models coupled with conduit flow process to simulate the laminar and turbulent groundwater flow conditions on karstic aquifers. Evaluations and estimations from the numerical simulations are useful for groundwater protection zone delineation, ecosystem preservation, water supply vulnerability analysis and related topics.

Baseline

To develop groundwater flow models on karstic aquifers these data is required:

Hydrogeology

  • Piezometric levels on observation points.

  • Aquifer parameters (hydraulic conductivity and storage coefficient).

  • Geometry of the hydrogeological units.

  • Groundwater chemistry

Karstic conduits

  • Geometry of the karstic conduits (from geophysical reseach)

  • Flow measurements on the conduits

  • Conduit water chemistry

Topography

  • Elevation curves of less than 0.5 meters in the zone of interest.

Other data could be required based on the study area.
